The Bluenose, a fishing and racing schooner built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, in 1921 by Smith and Rhuland to designs by William Roué, became a Canadian national symbol through its victories in international regattas, notably winning the International Fishermen's Trophy for 17 years. Originally designed for cod fishing, it also represented Canada at global events such as the 1933 Chicago World's Fair and the 1935 Silver Jubilee of King George V. However, the Bluenose was sold as a cargo vessel to the Caribbean during World War II and sank near Haiti in 1946 after running aground on a coral reef. Its legacy endures through replicas and its depiction on Canadian currency.
