Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal (1139-1185), was born in 1109. The son of Henry of Burgundy and Teresa of León, he rebelled against his mother in 1128 at the Battle of São Mamede, taking control of the County of Portugal. In 1139, after his victory at the Battle of Ourique against the Moors, he declared himself king. Portugal's independence was officially recognized in 1179 by Pope Alexander III. Afonso Henriques expanded Portuguese territory and consolidated his power, laying the foundations for an independent Portugal. He died in 1185 in Coimbra.
