Diogo Cão was a 15th-century Portuguese explorer, known for his expeditions along the west coast of Africa. In 1482, he discovered the mouth of the Congo River and erected padrões (stone pillars) to mark Portuguese sovereignty. During his second voyage in 1485, he explored further south, reaching present-day Namibia. His discoveries were crucial for Portugal, paving the way for future explorations by Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama, and contributing to the country's maritime and commercial expansion.
