Bartolomeu Dias (c. 1450–1500) was a Portuguese explorer, famous for being the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa in 1488. This expedition, commissioned by King John II of Portugal, revealed the connection between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. He initially named the area the Cape of Storms, later renamed the Cape of Good Hope.
Dias' discovery opened a new maritime route to Asia, facilitating European trade with India and the East. In 1500, Dias died during a storm off the same cape. He remains a key figure of the Age of Discovery.
