Antonio Prior do Crato (1531–1595) was a Portuguese nobleman and claimant to the Portuguese throne. He is known for his role in the Portuguese succession crisis of the late 16th century.
Born into the House of Braganza, he was a significant figure in the struggle against the Spanish Habsburgs, who had taken control of Portugal in 1580 after the death of King Henry of Portugal. Antonio Prior do Crato claimed the throne as a legitimate heir and led a resistance against the Spanish rule. His efforts included various military campaigns and diplomatic endeavors to restore Portuguese independence.
Despite his claims and initial support, Antonio Prior do Crato's attempts ultimately failed. Portugal remained under Spanish control until 1640, when it regained its independence. Antonio’s efforts, however, remain an important part of Portuguese history, symbolizing the resistance against foreign domination.
