Immanuel Kant was an 18th-century German philosopher whose work laid the groundwork for much of modern philosophy. He's particularly renowned for his work in epistemology, ethics, and metaphysics. Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" attempted to reconcile rationalism and empiricism, arguing that our knowledge is a product of both innate concepts and sensory experience. In ethics, his "Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals" introduced the concept of the categorical imperative, which suggests that moral actions should be based on principles that could be universally applied. His ideas have had a profound influence on subsequent philosophical thought, and he's often regarded as one of the most important figures in Western philosophy.
