Christopher Columbus lived in Portugal before undertaking his voyages of exploration. He married Filipa Moniz Perestrelo there, gaining access to valuable maritime knowledge. Columbus first proposed his plan to sail west to the Portuguese king, John II, who rejected it, preferring to focus on the route around Africa. After discovering the Americas under the Spanish flag in 1492, the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) divided the non-European world between Spain and Portugal, giving Portugal control over Brazil.
