João Rodrigues Cabrilho, also known as Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, was a Portuguese explorer who sailed under the Spanish flag. He is best known for his exploration of the west coast of North America. Cabrillo led the first European expedition to explore what is now California in 1542. His journey took him from the Baja Peninsula in Mexico up to as far north as the present-day coast of Oregon. Cabrillo's expedition was significant for mapping parts of the California coast, although he did not establish any permanent settlements. His explorations laid the groundwork for future European ventures into the region.
