The Presidency of the European Union is a rotating role held by each EU Member State for a period of six months. During this time, the presiding country coordinates meetings of the Council of the EU, oversees legislative discussions and represents the Council in its relations with other EU institutions. Since the Treaty of Lisbon, the permanent Presidency of the European Council is held by an elected President, while the Presidency of the Council of the EU remains rotating.
