In 1543, Portuguese sailors, possibly including Fernão Mendes Pinto, landed on the island of Tanegashima in Japan, marking one of the first direct contacts between the West and Japan. This event is often cited as the introduction of firearms, particularly the arquebus, to Japan. The Japanese, intrigued by this technology, quickly began producing local versions, which would play a crucial role in the later civil wars of the Sengoku period.
