In 1543, Portuguese sailors, possibly including Fernão Mendes Pinto, arrived in Tanegashima, introducing the arquebus to Japan. In 1548, the Italian Jesuit Niccolò Lancillotto wrote two reports on his presence in Japan. In 1549, Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier arrived in Kagoshima to begin evangelizing the country.
