The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed on June 7, 1494, was an agreement between Portugal and Spain, mediated by Pope Alexander VI, to divide the newly discovered lands of the New World. According to the treaty, an imaginary line was drawn approximately 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. Lands to the east of this line were assigned to Portugal, while those to the west were assigned to Spain.
The treaty aimed to prevent conflicts between the two Iberian powers over their new colonies and explorations. It had a significant impact on the mapping and colonization of the Americas, defining the spheres of influence and colonization for both countries during the Age of Discovery.
