The islands of Solor and Timor were discovered by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. Solor was explored around 1520, while Timor was discovered in 1515. The Portuguese established trading posts on these islands but shared Timor with the Dutch in the 17th century. Their presence introduced cultural and religious influences to the region.
