The Portuguese discovered the Maluku Islands in 1512 during their quest for valuable spices. The expedition, led by António de Abreu, aimed to control the spice trade following their capture of Malacca in 1511. Their presence led to conflicts with the Spanish, resolved by the Treaty of Zaragoza in 1529, which confirmed Portuguese dominance. However, the Dutch took control of the region in the early 17th century, ending Portuguese rule.
