Relations between Portugal and Thailand began in 1511, with Portugal being the first European nation to contact the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The Portuguese influenced Thai cuisine, language, and culture by introducing firearms and New World goods. Despite a decline in influence in the 17th century, ties remained strong, and the Portuguese Embassy in Bangkok was established in 1820. Relations were always friendly, and in 1964, both countries elevated their missions to embassies. Today, they maintain modest trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
