The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in Taiwan. In 1544, a Portuguese ship landed on the island, and they named it "Formosa," which means "beautiful" in Portuguese, due to the island's natural beauty.
Taiwan remained under brief Portuguese influence. The Portuguese established some trade posts in the region, but their presence was soon overshadowed by the Dutch and the Spanish, who played a more significant role in the colonization and exploitation of the island in the 17th century.
The Dutch established a colony on Taiwan's west coast in 1624, while the Spanish briefly occupied the northern part of the island before being driven out by the Dutch in 1642. The Portuguese gradually shifted their focus to other colonies in Asia and eventually withdrew from Taiwan.
