The Portuguese establishment in Macau in 1557 marked the beginning of a long period of European colonial influence in the region. In 1557, the Portuguese were granted permission by the Ming dynasty to settle in Macau, a small peninsula located on the southern coast of China. This territory was leased to them in exchange for an annual rent, allowing the Portuguese to establish themselves as a key commercial hub between Asia and Europe.
Macau became a crucial meeting point for trade between the East and the West, particularly for the trade of spices and silks. The Portuguese developed a strong presence in Macau, building infrastructure and establishing commercial relationships while respecting local authorities. Their influence lasted until 1999, when Macau was handed back to Chinese sovereignty after more than four centuries of Portuguese rule.
