In 1513, the Portuguese, led by Jorge Álvares, arrived in China and landed on Lintin Island in the Pearl River. After facing tensions with Chinese authorities, they secured the right in 1557 to establish a trading post in Macau, which became an important Portuguese colony until its return to China in 1999.
