Bento de Góis was a Portuguese Jesuit born in 1562 in Vila Franca do Campo, Azores. In 1595, he embarked on an audacious journey across Central Asia, departing from India with the goal of reaching China to strengthen Christian ties.
His expedition took him through largely uncharted territories for Europeans, including the Gobi Desert and the Pamir Mountains. Unfortunately, he died in 1607 in Su-cheu (now Jiuquan in Gansu), just short of reaching China. His travel accounts provided valuable insights into the regions he traversed and represented a significant step in Christian exploration of Central Asia.
