Saint Francis Xavier (1506–1552) was a Spanish Catholic missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) with Ignatius of Loyola. After studying at the University of Paris, he devoted himself to missionary work. Sent to Asia by the Portuguese, he worked extensively in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, and was one of the first missionaries to preach in Japan, converting thousands to Christianity.
He died in 1552 in China and was canonized in 1622. He is the patron saint of missions. His tomb in Goa remains an important pilgrimage site.
