José de Anchieta (1534–1597) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary and a significant figure in the early history of Brazil. He is often referred to as the "Apostle of Brazil" due to his efforts in evangelizing and establishing Jesuit missions in the country. Anchieta was instrumental in the development of the Brazilian colony, including the founding of the city of São Paulo.
He is also known for his contributions to Brazilian literature and linguistics, as he wrote in both Portuguese and the indigenous Tupi language. Anchieta's writings, including his plays and poetry, are considered important in the study of early Brazilian literature and the history of colonial Brazil.
