The Portuguese discovery of Mozambique began in the early 16th century with Vasco da Gama's exploration of the East African coast in 1498. In 1502, Pedro Álvares Cabral established formal trade relations with coastal kingdoms. The Portuguese then set up trading posts, including one in Sofala, and gradually extended their control, creating the colony of Mozambique. This Portuguese rule continued until Mozambique gained independence in 1975.
