In 1497, Vasco da Gama named the coastal region of what is now South Africa "Terra do Natal" because he arrived on Christmas Day. The name, meaning "Christmas" in Portuguese, eventually led to the region being called Natal. Today, it is known as KwaZulu-Natal, reflecting both its Zulu heritage and its historical name.
