In 1497, Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama set sail from Lisbon with four ships to find a maritime route to India. After rounding the Cape of Good Hope, he reached Calicut (now Kozhikode) on the southwest coast of India in May 1498. This voyage marked the beginning of Portuguese expansion into Asia, establishing direct trade routes between Europe and India and laying the groundwork for Portuguese influence in the Indian Ocean.
