On April 22, 1500, Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil during an expedition originally bound for India. He landed on the Brazilian coast, in what is now the state of Bahia, and claimed the land for the Portuguese crown. Initially named "Terra de Vera Cruz," the country was later renamed due to the valuable brazilwood found there. This discovery marked the beginning of Portuguese colonization, though significant interest in Brazil only grew in the 1530s with the establishment of sugarcane cultivation and the creation of hereditary captaincies.
