The Kingdom of Portugal emerged in the 12th century when Afonso Henriques declared himself king in 1139 after military victories and negotiations, becoming Afonso I. In 1143, the Treaty of Zamorra recognized Portugal as an independent kingdom, though this recognition was still limited. It was not until 1179 that Pope Alexander III officially confirmed Portugal's independence with the papal bull "Manifestis Probatum." These events laid the foundation for Portugal as a sovereign state, which was further consolidated through conquests and political alliances.
