50 Cents Dollar of Cook Islands 2010 - HMS Endeavour

The HMS Endeavour, originally a coal transport ship named Earl of Pembroke, was purchased and refitted by the Royal Navy in 1768 for a scientific and exploratory mission under the command of James Cook. Its primary goal was to observe the transit of Venus from Tahiti, before exploring the South Pacific. Cook mapped the coasts of New Zealand and discovered the eastern coast of Australia, naming it New South Wales. After a perilous journey, including running aground on the Great Barrier Reef, the ship returned to England in 1771. Later used for military purposes, the Endeavour was renamed Lord Sandwich before being scuttled in 1778 off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island. Its voyage marked a significant advancement in Pacific mapping and the history of exploration.
