Obverse: Salia Koroma was a prominent Sierra Leonean accordionist and singer, born in 1903 in Segbwema. He was trained by his father, an accordionist, and his father's apprentices, instead of receiving a colonial education. Koroma rose to national fame in the 1950s when he recorded music for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service, which was later distributed as 78 RPM records by Nigerian Jonathan Adenuga’s Nugatone label and the Bassophone label. He was known for his praise songs for Mende chiefs and traditional folk music, as well as his compositions reflecting life in Sierra Leone. Koroma continued performing into his eighties before losing contact during the Sierra Leone Civil War in 1991. He is presumed to have died in the 1990s, leaving behind a significant cultural legacy.
