China (Chinese: 中国, zhōngguó), in long form the People's Republic of China (PRC), also called People's China and Communist China, is a country in East Asia. With more than 1.4 billion inhabitants, or around a sixth of the world's population, it will, in 2023, be the second most populous country in the world, after India. China is one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (Republic of China until 1971, then People's Republic of China since that date). The Constitution of the People's Republic of China defines it as "a socialist state of people's democratic dictatorship, led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants." Renminbi (人民币, "people's currency", abbreviated to RMB) is the official name of the currency in the People's Republic of China. The international standard ISO 4217 code for the currency is CNY, formed from the ISO 3166-1 code for the People's Republic of China (CN) and the initial (Y) of the romanized name yuan reminbi (commonly referred to as "yuan") of the currency.
