The front depicts the portrait of Prince Louis Rwagasore, born January 10, 1932, was a political leader and the son of King Mwambutsa IV of Burundi. Educated in Belgium, he was influenced by anti-colonial movements and in 1958 founded the Union for National Progress (UPRONA), a party crucial to Burundi's independence. Pleading for unity between Hutus and Tutsis, he led UPRONA to an electoral victory in September 1961. However, two weeks later he was assassinated in Bujumbura by Georges Kageorgis, an act attributed to Belgian colonial interests and rivals. policies. Despite his death, Burundi gained independence on July 1, 1962. Rwagasore is commemorated as a national hero for his efforts towards a united and independent Burundi.
