Obverse: Effigy of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier (1746-1792), who was sentenced to death by hanging for his participation in the independence movement known as the Inconfidência Mineira, and is today revered as a hero and civic patron of the Brazilian nation. His image is flanked by the inscription "Brazil" and motifs alluding to the Inconfidência Mineira - the triangle of the flag of the inconfidentes, superimposed by a bird representing freedom and peace.
Reverse: On the left, diagonal lines in the background highlight the inscription corresponding to the face value, followed by the inscriptions "centavos" and the inscription corresponding to the year of minting.
