The Costa Rican colón (Spanish plural: colones; symbol: ₡; ISO 4217 code: CRC) is the official currency of Costa Rica, although in practice the United States dollar (USD) is also widely used, especially in tourist areas. It is subdivided into 100 céntimos. The Costa Rican colón was named after the Genoese navigator Christopher Columbus (Spanish: Cristóbal Colón). Coins of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 500 colons exist and circulate. The colón is a floating currency, meaning its value fluctuates against other currencies like the US dollar.
