It inhabits lakes and rivers in boreal and temperate regions during the breeding season and migrates to warmer coastal waters in winter. An excellent swimmer and diver, it primarily feeds on fish and builds its nest on floating vegetation or small islands. Threats to the common loon include water pollution, habitat loss.
