The stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) is a large European beetle known for the prominent mandibles of the males, resembling deer antlers. Males can reach up to 8 cm and use these mandibles in ritualized combat to attract females. Dark brown with mahogany highlights, this insect spends most of its life as a larva in decaying wood, a stage lasting 4 to 6 years, before emerging as an adult for just a few weeks in summer. Living primarily in deciduous forests, the stag beetle is now protected in several European countries due to the decline of its natural habitat.
