The bobtail squid is a small marine creature, measuring between 1 to 8 cm, known for its bioluminescence and ability to camouflage. It inhabits shallow waters in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans, where it hides in the sand during the day and hunts at night. Its body is covered with chromatophores, allowing it to change color, and it harbors bioluminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri) in a light organ. This symbiotic relationship helps the squid blend in by mimicking ambient light. A carnivore, it feeds on small crustaceans and fish. For defense, it can release ink or bury itself in the sand.
