The front depicts a giant kingfisher (Megaceryle maximus) is the largest of the kingfishers, measuring between 42 and 46 cm long. Recognizable by its spotted black and white plumage and distinctive crest, it exhibits sexual dimorphism with males having a red breast and females having a white breast spotted with black. It inhabits the rivers, lakes and coasts of sub-Saharan Africa, feeding mainly on fish, but also on crustaceans, amphibians and small animals. Hunting by diving, it digs burrows to nest, where both parents share the incubation and feeding of the young. Classified as “least concern” by the IUCN, it remains vulnerable to the degradation of its aquatic habitat and cattle, on the reverse.
