The real (R$), introduced on July 1, 1994, is Brazil's official currency and the result of the Plano Real, an economic strategy designed to combat the chronic hyperinflation that plagued the country since the 1980s. Under the government of Itamar Franco and led by Finance Minister Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the plan initially introduced the URV (Unidade Real de Valor), a fictitious accounting unit, which was later replaced by the real, initially pegged to the US dollar to ensure stability. This reform quickly curbed inflation, restored public confidence in the currency, and stabilized the economy, marking a major turning point in the country’s economic history. Despite periods of volatility, the real remains a symbol of this achievement.
