The tenge is the official currency of Kazakhstan. It is divided into 100 tïın. It was introduced in November 1993 to replace the Soviet ruble at the rate of one tenge per 500 rubles. The ISO-4217 currency code is KZT. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 tïın, as well as coins of 1, 2, 5, 10 tenge. The National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK) is responsible for managing the country's monetary policy and issuing currency.
The word tenge in Kazakh and in most Turkic languages means "game of scales", which gives this name the same value as the lira, the pound, and the peso.
