Kuna

The kuna is Croatia's currency, introduced in 1994 to replace the Yugoslav dinar after Croatia's independence in 1991. Its name originates from an ancient medieval unit of account.

Divided into 100 lipa, the kuna was used in different periods of Croatian history, notably during the Middle Ages in Slavonia between 1018 and 1380.

During World War II, it was reused by various groups, including Croatian anti-fascist partisans who issued vouchers denominated in kunas.

After a brief period of being withdrawn from circulation, the dinar was reintroduced until the kuna became Croatia's official currency again in 1994, symbolizing its independence and the desire for a distinct national currency.

In 2023, Croatia adopted the euro, ending the use of the kuna and marking a new chapter in its monetary history.
