The pound sterling is the official currency of the United Kingdom, as well as several British Overseas Territories. Its ISO code is GBP (Great British Pound). 1 pound sterling (£1) is subdivided into 100 pence (plural of penny), whose symbol is p. The term "pound" comes from the Latin word libra, a unit of weight used in ancient Rome. Originally, the pound sterling denoted a unit based on one pound of silver weight.
Coins in circulation include denominations of 1 pence, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence, 1 pound and 2 pound.
Although the pound sterling is the best known, several other countries also use a currency called a "pound", sometimes with regional variations. Some examples are Lebanese, Syrian, and Egyptian pounds.
