The 2 euro commemorative coin features on the reverse side the iconic profile of the Duke of Urbino, a masterpiece by Piero della Francesca, one of the greatest Renaissance painters with strong ties to the court of Urbino. Gifted with a brilliant personality, the artist dedicated a treatise to perspective and acted as an intermediary between the artistic tradition of central Italy and the Flemish realistic influence, resulting in a meticulous reproduction of faces and landscapes. The ceremonial portrait of the patron leader is taken from the famous work 'Diptych of the Dukes of Urbino', painted in oil on canvas and kept in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence.
