The 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship collector coin captures the exciting standoff and the key moment of the game: when the puck enters the goal. The reverse side of the coin depicts a player with the puck on his stick at the face-off, when the score is still even. The obverse side depicts a puck flying into the goal and the conclusion of the match. The coin is designed by Petri Neuvonen.
Ice hockey world championships have been held since 1920, when the competition was held in Belgium. Before 2012, Finland has hosted the men's Ice Hockey World Championships on six occasions: in 1965, 1974, 1982, 1991, 1997, and 2003.
