In the early 1990s, Slovenia declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, sparking a brief war of independence in June 1991. Despite armed clashes with Yugoslav federal forces, Slovenia successfully repelled the attacks. On June 25, 1991, the Slovenian Parliament officially declared independence. A ceasefire was negotiated, and Slovenia gained international recognition as an independent state, paving the way for the subsequent dissolution of Yugoslavia.
