CURRENCY: Som (KGS): The som is divided into 100 tyiyns. Commonly used banknotes are 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 5000 Kyrgyz soms. Coins are less common, but there are coins of 1, 3, 5 and 10 Kyrgyz soms. the Kyrgyz som (KGS), was introduced on May 10, 1993. It replaced the former Soviet currency, the Soviet ruble, which was in circulation before the country's independence in 1991. Since then, the Kyrgyz som has been the currency official and legal Kyrgyzstan.
