The former Abbey of Gellone, also known as the Abbey of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, is a historic site located in the commune of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, in the Hérault department of France. Founded in the 9th century by Guilhem (or Guillaume) d'Orange, it was originally a Benedictine abbey. The abbey is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture and houses the relics of Saint-Guilhem, making it an important medieval pilgrimage site. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the abbey is situated in a spectacular natural setting surrounded by mountainous landscapes. It attracts visitors for its history, architecture, and religious significance and also serves as a stop on the Way of St. James pilgrimage route in France.
