The Grand Blockhaus of Batz-sur-Mer, built during World War II by the Germans to protect the port of Saint-Nazaire, was initially disguised as a villa. After the war, it remained intact and served various purposes, including as a shelter for refugees. In 1995, the municipality issued a call for projects for its reuse, and the Braeuer brothers transformed the blockhaus into a museum dedicated to the local history of the war. The museum opened its doors in 1997, offering visitors an insight into this dark period of history.
