Vulcania is a French center for scientific culture focused on volcanism, located in Saint-Ours-les-Roches, in the Puy-de-Dôme region, about 15 km northwest of Clermont-Ferrand. Launched by former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, it is also known as the "European Volcano Park". The project faced opposition, particularly from environmental advocates. Despite the tragic death of volcanologists Maurice and Katia Krafft, who supported a similar project, Giscard d'Estaing revived the idea with a broader concept focused on tourism and education. The choice of location was debated, and ultimately Vulcania was situated in the heart of the Puys chain. The scientific aspect was strengthened with the establishment of an international scientific council and an architectural competition. Although Jean-Michel Wilmotte's initial project was favored by the jury, it was Hans Hollein's subterranean concept that was chosen. Thus, Vulcania has become a unique destination offering an immersive experience in volcanism, embodying a balance between science, environment, and tourism.
