Wilhelm Schickard, a 17th-century German astronomer and mathematician, designed the first mechanical calculating machine around 1623. His invention was intended to assist Johannes Kepler in astronomical calculations. The machine used gear wheels to perform addition and subtraction operations, with a clock-like mechanism to prevent errors. Unfortunately, the machine was destroyed in a fire in 1624, and its plans were rediscovered centuries later. Although its impact was limited in its time, Schickard is recognized as a significant pioneer in the development of calculating machines.
