Elsie MacGill was a remarkable Canadian engineer and aircraft designer, often referred to as the "Queen of the Hurricanes." Born in 1905, she became the world's first female aircraft designer. During World War II, she played a pivotal role in overseeing production of the Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft at the Canadian Car and Foundry (CC&F) plant in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay). Her contributions were crucial to the war effort, as the Hurricane was a key aircraft used by the Allies during the conflict. MacGill's work extended beyond engineering; she was also an advocate for women's rights in the workplace and played a significant role in advancing women's participation in engineering and aviation. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of engineers and women in STEM fields.
