Serre-Ponçon Lake is an artificial lake created in 1959 by the construction of a dam on the Durance River, at the border of the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments in the southern French Alps. This dam, known as the Serre-Ponçon Dam, retains the waters of the Durance River and generates electricity. The lake is also a popular recreational destination, offering activities such as sailing, swimming, and fishing. It is fed by Lake Espinasses, which plays a role in the region's hydraulic system by supplying water to the EDF Durance Canal for hydroelectric power generation.
